So, you heard some scurrying noises in the attic, and you have your flashlight in hand, but there is no sign of the noisy creature. But alas, you see another sign of the culprit.

While as an unpleasant experience as it may initially seem, finding pest feces is helpful to solving your pest problem. If you can identify your pest problem, you can increase your chances of eliminating them from your property.

Here is a breakdown of common pest poo characteristics to help you determine “What’s that Scat?”   And we’ve got a visual reference chart for you at the bottom, too.

Mice

Mouse droppings are one of the most commonly identified droppings. They are darkly colored, oblong-shaped pellets scattered around any areas that mice live be or run around.

Differences in Rat and Mouse Scat

Rat scat is generally thicker, but shorter in length than mouse droppings.

Squirrel vs. Rat

If you come across some scat that looks like a rat, and it lightens over time, that is most likely from a squirrel.

Various Bugs | Cockroach

Cockroaches are hard to miss once they are in your home but identifying their scat will help identify the best places for traps and sprays. Small and granular, cockroach scat looks like ground pepper spilled on the floor. Their sticky scat can stick to walls, and it is toxic when dry. These toxins can trigger sickness in humans ranging from gastrointestinal problems to asthma attacks.

Bed Bugs

Usually found only in beds or soft surfaces, bed bugs van wreak havoc if left untreated. Even smaller than cockroach scat, bed bugs leave tiny specks that sometimes absorb and look like felt pen spots. If you can identify these tiny droppings, it can rule out fleas or spiders and confirm it is indeed a bed bug problem.

Termites

Termite scat, or frass, is similar in color to whatever wood they have been previously consuming. If you find frass, it will be in piles and six-sided. These distinguishing features make termite frass easily distinguishable from other kinds of pest poo.
