As a military community, we know the levels of sacrifice offered by service members and their supporting families more than most. With Memorial Day near, we would like to honor those who have given the ultimate sacrifice. Occasionally Memorial Day and Veterans Day are confused. While both are days of patriotic remembrance,there are some differences worth noting. Let’s look into the differences of these patriotic holidays.
Memorial Day: Service members who gave their life in our nation’s war memories are honored the last Monday in May.
Veterans Day: Recognized on November 11 each year, this day honors everyone who have served in the US military. There are no limitations such as combat or injury, or even serving during a time of war.
An easy way to think of this is to look at the name: veteran and memorial. A veteran is someone who has been around the block, so to say. You can think of them as someone who has experienced the military life.
Memorial Day, on the other hand, has roots all the way back to the Civil War. A memorial references a memory. You can remember this by thinking of the memories of those who have past on from this life. It is a day to remember those who have served our nation and who are not longer with us as a result.

- 9/11 Memorial Beam from the World Trade Center
